HAMPTON, Va. — It was a day of reflection for many across the nation and Hampton Roads as many came together for National Day of Prayer.
President Biden proclaimed May 2, 2024, a National Day of Prayer. In part, the proclamation reads: “On this National Day of Prayer, we recognize the power of prayer to strengthen our spirits, draw us together, and create hope for a better tomorrow.”
People gathered at Antioch Baptist Church in Hampton on Thursday to commemorate the day.
“Today is so important because the world definitely needs prayer. The whole world needs prayer,” said attendee Seleasha Washington.
The theme of the service was 'United Together, Believing for Better.'
Currently, there is civil unrest. War is taking place overseas; protests are breaking out at colleges and universities in the Commonwealth and across the country. Throughout the day, different pastors prayed for the military, area schools, the youth and for violence to end. Pastors also reminded people about the power of prayer.
“Our power is finite, but God’s power is, and we believe He is able to change things beyond what we can see or do,” said Antioch Baptist Church Reverend Kirk Houston Jr.
Amidst the day of prayer, NAACP Hampton Roads Chapter President Gaylene Kanoyton reminded people to vote in this year’s upcoming elections.
“Prayer is not only about asking, it’s about acting,” said Kanoyton.
“The climate that we’re in right now is pivotal in American history, and so this election is very important. We must register people to vote and mobilize them as well.”
