HAMPTON, Va. — Police officers in Hampton shot a dog while they were serving a search warrant Thursday morning, the Hampton Police Division said.
The shooting happened around 10 a.m. in the 100 block of Doolittle Road, which is near the intersection of Mercury Boulevard and La Salle Avenue.
When entering during "high-risk search warrant," officers were confronted by an unleashed and aggressive pitbull, according to the Hampton Police Division.
"The K-9 bit two of the [SWAT] officers before running back toward the residence, where it then attacked the female resident," police wrote in a news release. "This prompted officers to fire less lethal rounds at the K-9. The less lethal rounds had no [effect] on the K-9 resulting in one officer discharging his firearm to end the threat."
Medics took the woman to a hospital to be treated for injuries caused by the dog that weren't considered life-threatening. A police officer is also being treated for injuries not considered life-threatening.
The Hampton Police Division confirmed the dog died from its injuries.
After the warrant was served, Markies Lamar Parks, 30, was arrested for one count of possession of a firearm while in possession of drugs, one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and four counts of manufacture, sale, possession of controlled substance.
