Officers responded to a burglary inside Superior Pawn and Gun on West Mercury Blvd around 6:34 a.m., according to an HPD spokesperson. When officers arrived, they found a man outside of the business, but he went back inside after seeing police.

Multiple police command posts were set up. One near the Langley Apartments and another in a nearby Food Lion parking lot. Throughout the day, the police attempted to get the man out of the business using messages over a loudspeaker and even offering him a phone to communicate.

As of 5:30 p.m., investigators were still at the scene.

Both eastbound and westbound lanes of West Mercury Blvd. were closed between North King St. and LaSalle Ave. for most of the day. The eastbound lanes reopened around 2 p.m. and the westbound lanes reopened around 2:47 p.m.

During the incident, a woman that lives in the area spoke to 13 News Now. She said she was shocked to see several law enforcement officials swarming an area near her home early in morning.

"It is very stressful because this morning I was trying to take my daughter to school and when we stepped outside of the building, I saw the guns were drawn and I had to immediately pull her back in and make sure that she got down," the woman said. "There is a SWAT team and their snipers. There's a lot going on back there."
