HAMPTON, Va. — It's been days now since a family has been at CHKD after someone shot multiple people at Buckroe Beach Saturday night, sending one of those victims to the hospital.
The victim at CHKD is only 12-years-old, but his mother said he's fighting hard to survive.
"Shocked, numb, scared, terrified, overwhelmed," Jate Hanley explained.
Hanley's still swept away by emotions, as she sits by her 12-year-old son's beside at CHKD watching him recover.
"They did their last surgery today. They were able to close his stomach up. He still has a breathing tube inside. He's breathing on his own," she said.
Her son, Kreetay Briggs, Jr. was shot Saturday night at Buckroe Beach. And, so far, police haven't arrested anyone.
But, on Thursday night, police and volunteers had a RESET walk in the Buckroe Beach area to hear the concerns from neighbors and also let them know about resources available to them.
"When crime occurs in your city, it impacts an entire community," said Carla Reaves, the Director of Victim Services for the City of Hampton.
Synethia White with the City of Hampton believes people in the area are victims too.
"Bad things do happen all over, but it's not going to affect how we want people to come together to enjoy the beach or any other area in our city," said White.
"I'm glad that they're out there searching the beach, looking for clues. That makes me feel good," said Hanley.
Even all the way in Norfolk at CHKD, Hanley and her family are thankful for the support from across the water, as they focus on recovery and justice.
"Everybody's concerned. Everybody wants him to get better and wants these people or this person to be found," Hanley said.
