HAMPTON, Va. — Hampton Roads is at risk for multiple disasters. Preparing for the unexpected not only consists of having a survival kit but also having training and knowledge that you can take with you wherever you go.
Hampton residents will get the chance to explore some of these things, like fire safety, light search and rescue, and basic first aid in a free course on disaster response.
Hampton's free course on Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training kicks off with an in-person orientation on Tuesday, February 13 at 6 PM at the city's Emergency Operations Center. It runs through Saturday, March 23, when a hands-on training exercise will be held.
During the course of the program, lessons can be accessed online and are self-paced.
"We want our citizens to be able to identify the hazards that are most prominent in this area that we're most at risk for," said Gwen Pointer, interim coordinator of emergency management for Hampton.
The course is designed for people to learn how to properly help themselves, their families, and their neighbors in the event of a disaster.
"Survivability depends upon preparedness, depends upon knowledge," Pointer said. "So, we want our citizens to know what could happen, and then, what to do so that they react quickly."
The course uses online resources and practical exercises to train volunteers to help people before first responders arrive.
Pointer said the program gets residents prepared before an incident happens.
"Awareness, education and supplies are what you need for yourself and your family to stay safe," Pointer said. "Until help arrives, you have people... hopefully in your family and in your neighborhood that can render assistance."
People who complete the program can also volunteer with CERT and get involved in other emergency preparedness projects with the city.
Hampton residents ages 18 and older can sign up for the course. People younger than 18 will be considered with a parent or guardian.

Pointer said the city plans to offer the class again in the fall.
Non-Hampton residents should check with their local emergency management office to see if their city offers a similar program.
