Arrest made after woman is assaulted and shot in Hampton

The Hampton Police Division arrested 35-year-old Matthew Persaud in connection with a maiming that occurred Friday afternoon.

HAMPTON, Va. — A Hampton man has been arrested in connection with a maiming that occurred on Friday afternoon.

According to the Hampton Police Division, around 1:44 p.m. on Oct. 11, a call about a shooting in the 100 block of Saunders Road was received. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a woman who had been shot; members of the Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue transported her to a local hospital for treatment.

The Division said its preliminary investigation revealed the victim was visiting her children’s father at his home. When she attempted to leave the residence, the suspect, 35-year-old Matthew Seunarine Persaud, physically assaulted the victim before shooting and striking her.

Persaud is charged with maiming, abduction, strangulation, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, domestic assault, and an emergency protective order.
