Hampton crash sends 5 to hospital

The accident happened around 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of Old Buckroe Road and Shelton Road.

HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- A two car accident Friday morning sent five people to the hospital.

The accident happened around 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of Old Buckroe Road and Shelton Road.

Police said a 2001 Lincoln was traveling eastbound on Shelton Road when the driver struck a 2006 Chevy sedan that was attempting to make a right hand turn off of Old Buckroe Road.

Three people in one vehicle and two in the other were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Mark Bonniville of Hayes was issued a summons for failure to yield the right of way.

Residents in the area said there have been too many accidents at the intersection to keep track of. There reportedly have been three crashes just this summer.

Jean Walden, the Neighborhood Watch Coordinator for the Shelton Road/Buckroe area, started circulating a petition calling for the city to make the intersection safer.

"We just don't want anyone to lose their life," Walden said. She said parents are concerned because children stand on that corner waiting for the school bus in the morning.

Gerald Murray's house is on one of the corners. His house and property have been damaged a number of times by accidents and vehicles exceeding the speed limit.

"I've had my fence replaced twice, I've had a big truck up here in my yard and a tree has been damaged," said Murray.

He said a ditch between his yard and Buckroe Road has protected his property from more damage.

Walden has collected more than 200 signatures on her petition.
