Hundreds attend career fair in Hampton

High schoolers were able to check things out in the morning at the Hampton Roads Convention Center, and the career fair was open to the public in the afternoon.

HAMPTON, Va. — More than 40 businesses hired people on the spot Friday, at a career fair in Hampton.

High school students were able to check things out in the morning at the Hampton Roads Convention Center, and the career fair was open to the public in the afternoon.

Participating employers included the Newport News Sheriff's Office, Hampton Roads Transit, and Busch Gardens Williamsburg.

"Having all of these companies available, it shows our youth what is available," said Busch Gardens recruitment manager Caitlin Cox. "'What do I want to do with my life?' Why work just at any restaurant when you could work at a theme park!"

Several employers were offering signing bonuses of up to $5,000. Attendees were also able to get their resumes reviewed or sign up for certification courses, as well as connect with resources regarding first-time home-buying, veteran support services, and more.

Newport News City Councilman John Eley and the Brooks Crossing Innovation and Opportunity Center hosted the fair.
