Habitat for Humanity helps mother of three with Hampton home's groundbreaking

Kendra Turner is a widow who lost her husband in 2021. She will be moving into their new home when it's finished with her son and two daughters.

HAMPTON, Va. — The Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg For Home held a groundbreaking ceremony for a future home in Hampton on Wednesday morning.

First Baptist Church of Hampton sponsored the Habitat home, which will be built on Patterson Avenue.

A widow and mother of three was approved through Habitat's First-Time Home Buyer Program. Kendra Turner committed to pay back a zero-interest, 20- to 30-year mortgage.

Turner is a widow who lost her husband in 2021. She will be moving into their new home when it's finished with her son and two daughters.

They are required to have steady employment, a good credit history, and be willing to provide 300 hours of "sweat equity" helping to build their home and the homes of other approved Habitat partner families and helping as volunteers at one of the three local Habitat ReStores in Newport News, Williamsburg or Yorktown. The buyers must also attend homebuyer education and financial literacy classes.

If all goes well, the home will be ready for the Turner family to move in by the end of the year.

Currently, Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg announced they will not be accepting applications to the First-Time Homebuyer Program in 2024 due to a lack of affordable land available to build new homes.
