Hampton woman dies in two-vehicle crash on Mercury Boulevard

Police believe Phyllis James was traveling west on West Mercury Boulevard and tried to turn left onto Pennwood Drive when she collided with another vehicle.

HAMPTON, Va. — A woman is dead after a two-vehicle crash in Hampton on Wednesday morning.

According to a post on social media from the Hampton Police Division, 911 dispatchers received reports around 6:15 a.m. about a crash on West Mercury Boulevard and Pennwood Drive.

An initial investigation indicates 70-year-old Phyllis James was traveling westbound on West Mercury Boulevard and a second vehicle was traveling eastbound. When Jones attempted to turn left onto Pennwood Drive, police say the two vehicles collided in the intersection.

James was transported to a local hospital, but died from her injuries.

The Hampton Police Division’s Accident Reconstruction Team said the crash remains under investigation.

No charges have been filed and the driver of the second vehicle has not been identified.
