HAMPTON, Va. — The first Black-owned brewery in Hampton Roads announced it will be closing down after two years in business.

1865 Brewing Company in Hampton announced the closure in a Facebook post on Friday evening.

"Along our journey, we've encountered the typical challenges faced by small businesses in any industry," the brewery's management wrote. "Regrettably, we haven't been able to establish a sustainable business model, so after careful consideration, we've decided to close our doors."

The brewery opened on Mallory Street in July 2021 following several delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. It's close to Fort Monroe, where the first documented Africans arrived in North America more than 400 years ago. It was named "1865" to honor the year that slavery was abolished in the United States with the passing and ratification of the 13th Amendment.

"While we may temporarily step back, please stay connected with us, as you may see us reemerge in the future," the brewery wrote.
