CHESAPEAKE, Va. — It is a reunion bound to happen.
Chesapeake woman Kay Stone met with Michael Barnett on Friday. He was one of the men who rescued her from a two-vehicle crash along Interstate 64 Westbound near the Battlefield Boulevard exit earlier this month.
"It burst into flames, and I can remember that my adrenaline was high, but I didn't get emotional, but I did cry while I watched my car burn," said Stone while recalling that day.
But Stone survived after Barnett and a few other drivers stopped to help her.
"I lost my husband on April 3rd, and when I hit the jersey block of cement, I thought that I might be airborne," she recalled. "I just looked to the heavens and said, 'Here I come, Don.'"
"I think of all the vehicles that just kept going by if we had of keep going by too; there's no telling if she would of if Kay would have made it," said Barnett.
Barnett and others were able to pull Stone to safety before her vehicle went up in flames. While Stone still feels a minor soreness from that day, she and Barnett are glad they were able to meet.
"I mean, obviously, the Lord has everyone's days numbered, and, just as you said, it wasn't your time. He has another plan for you. He has a plan for me. Nobody knows what the plans are, but in time, I guess we will know."
Stone said she feels grateful for everyone who helped that day, and she hopes to meet everyone who was involved. Meanwhile, Barnett does not consider himself a hero, but he is thankful that he was at the right place and time.
