Residents evacuated from Chesapeake extended stay hotel during Christmas Day fire

Fire officials say the fire was accidental, starting in a window HVAC unit inside a vacant apartment.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — All residents of an extended stay hotel in Chesapeake were able to get out safely when fire broke out Christmas morning.

A little after 9 a.m. Monday, firefighters were dispatched to the Woodspring Suites on Kempsville after several people reported smoke coming from a window, the Chesapeake Fire Department said in a release.

Fire crews arrived to heavy smoke billowing from a second-floor window at the back of an apartment. While some firefighters worked on extinguishing the flames, others helped evacuate the building and made sure the fire hadn't spread to other apartments, according to the release.

The fire was contained to a single room and under control by about 9:30 a.m. Fire crews stayed for a while longer removing smoke from the building and checking air quality before letting residents back inside.

There were no reported injuries.
