CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A man was killed and a woman was injured Friday after a Chesapeake police pursuit ended in a crash, the Chesapeake Police Department (CPD) confirmed.
According to CPD, around 1:16 p.m., an officer attempted to stop a sedan for both failing to maintain their lane of travel and a registration violation on South Military Highway. That's near I-464.
The driver of the car did not stop, so the police chase began, according to the department.
When the cars reached the intersection of South Military Highway and George Washington Highway North, the sedan crashed into an uninvolved SUV, police said.
The driver of the sedan died at the scene. They were identified as 23-year-old Derron Williams Jr. of Norfolk. The driver of the SUV was hospitalized, but she is expected to survive, according to CPD.
All lanes at the intersection were closed while CPD investigated, but the roads reopened at around 4:54 p.m., the city said.
This marks at least the eighth police pursuit involving Chesapeake officers just this year, and it isn’t the first to end near the Deep Creek section of the city either.
In July, a woman and baby were left seriously hurt after a suspect crashed into their car during a police chase on George Washington Highway. In that case, police said both the woman and baby were expected to survive.
In May, the police department revised its pursuit policy. The updated policy emphasized the need to consider public safety and surroundings when weighing whether to chase a suspect by vehicle. You can read the full redacted pursuit policy by clicking here.
