Husband and wife found dead inside Chesapeake home after fire

Chesapeake firefighters received a report of a fire in the 400th block of Supplejack Court Thursday at about 10:50 p.m. Several neighbors reported the house fire.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A husband and wife died inside their Chesapeake home during a fire late Thursday evening.

Several neighbors of a residence on Supplejack Court reported the house fire just before 11 p.m., according to Captain Steven Bradley, a Chesapeake Fire Department spokesperson.

While fire crews were on the way to the fire, they learned that two people were still possibly inside the burning home. They arrived several minutes later to find heavy fire on the first floor.

Bradley said firefighters entered the home with hose lines to search for occupants and attack the fire. They found a man and woman on the first floor who had died.

The victims were later identified as the home's residents, 65-year-old Charles Jones and his 66-year-old wife, Theresa Jones.

Demecca Taylor, a niece of the couple, stood outside the home Friday morning. She told 13News Now that the Jones had lived in the home on Supplejack Court since the 1990s. She even lived there with them for about three years as a teenager.

“To have it as a home, to look at it now that it’s unrecognizable, it’s sad,” she said

Crews had the fire under control by around 11:20 p.m.

"Fire Investigators combed through fire debris in great detail this morning looking for evidence of a fire cause," Bradley said. "It was determined the fire started on the front porch to the left of the doorway. The exact cause could not be determined."

Bradley also said that fire investigators found nothing suspicious.

Taylor said she felt like she was living in a dream, having to call her loved ones about the deaths of her aunt and uncle. She said the hardest part will be having to clean up the inside of this home.

“I wish I could’ve did more with my aunt and my uncle," she said. "I love them and I miss them. They’re in a better place now.”
