Man found guilty of first-degree murder in 2021 case

Raheem Lamont Cherry was found guilty of the May 2021 murder of Laura Miles, Matthew R. Hamel, the Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Chesapeake, announced.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — 13NewsNow covered this story when the news first broke in 2021. Laura Miles, a New York resident who traveled to Hampton Roads for work frequently, was attacked in her truck on the morning of May 17, 2021.

Miles was on the phone with her husband who heard a scream followed by a struggle before the call was dropped. When he called back, there was no response, however, he then received a suspicious text message from his wife’s phone that he was sure was not sent by her. Miles’ body was later found in a wooded area near her apartment in the Western Branch area of Chesapeake. She had been stabbed multiple times.

A jury deliberated for just three hours Friday following four days of testimony, charging Cherry, 22, with first-degree murder, robbery, abduction, and illegal concealment of Miles’ body.

Mrs. Miles was survived by her husband and three children.
