CHESAPEAKE, W.Va. — Lisa McKinley is an artist, and hair is her canvas. While she's seen hair trends change over the years, she says the feeling clients would get from a fresh hairstyle remains the same.
"Just the smile on their face, how they begin to cry... they cannot believe their 'old me' is back," says McKinley.
That was never more true, McKinley says, than for her clients who suffered from hair loss.
"I deal with a lot of women that are going through chemo or they are going through a particular medical treatment," McKinley says. "And losing your hair, you lose your self-esteem, you lose your motivation."
It was because of those clients that McKinley began collecting and refreshing new or gently-used wigs for women who've lost their hair. She called the effort Wigs 4 Purpose.
"A woman's hair is her crowning glory," says McKinley. "It can help encourage and motivate a woman to be who she is called to be."
Weaving her profession into her passion, McKinley is doing more than just revitalizing wigs. "One woman said, 'Wow, you restored my marriage. You restored my motivation... I'm loving myself again,'" says McKinley. "It's just amazing what a wig can do."
