CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Chesapeake Public Schools said their message of “see something, say something” was used effectively when a student reported a peer had a knife at Great Bridge High School on Tuesday.

The knife was reported Tuesday afternoon and quickly confiscated by administration, according to a letter sent home to families from the school administration. No threats were made against students or staff. The School Resource Officer was immediately contacted.

“We first want to remind our students that weapons of any kind are not allowed on school grounds and having one will result in serious consequences,” the letter stated. “In this case, appropriate disciplinary action was taken immediately, and the incident was reported to the Chesapeake Police Department for further investigation.”

The administrators also applauded the student who reported the knife.

“Incidents such as this provide us with the opportunity for teachable moments,” the letter stated. “Please take time to talk with your child about items that are not permitted at school and continue to encourage them to report any safety concerns immediately. By working together, we can all ensure the safety of our students and staff.”
