CHESAPEAKE, Va. — The Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office is investigating an incident at a bus stop Monday morning, according to an email sent out to the Chesapeake Public School Division.

The email, sent by the division's Superintendent Dr. Jared A. Cotton, details that a white suburban SUV approached a student at a Butts Road Primary School bus stop.

The driver of the vehicle called the name of a girl, who is a student of Butts Road Primary School, claiming to represent Chesapeake Public Schools, before instructing her to get into the SUV.

The girl's mother, who was nearby, then approached the vehicle requesting identification, and the driver quickly drove off.

The mother reported the incident to officials and the city's Sheriff’s Office was informed.

The Sheriff’s Office said deputies will be monitoring the bus stop for the next few days to ensure students' safety.

"We want to assure you that we are taking this matter very seriously and will keep you informed as more details become available," Cotton said in the email. "Please remind your children of the importance of being cautious around strangers and encourage them to report any suspicious behavior to a trusted adult immediately."
