Habitat for Humanity helps mother of two with Chesapeake home's groundbreaking

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — The Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads (SHR) held a groundbreaking ceremony for a future home in Chesapeake on Tuesday morning.

The City of Chesapeake and other partners sponsored the Habitat home that was built on Commerce Street.

Crystal, a single mother, will be moving into a 1500 square foot, four-bedroom house with her two children. She took classes in financial management and committed to repaying a no-interest mortgage. She also provided "sweat equity."

Members of the military, firefighters, law enforcement and other fields volunteered during SHR’s Heroes Build Weeks (April 15 – 26) along with Habitat’s famed Red Hat builders.

“We are so happy to make a dent in the affordable housing crisis in our community and nation with this new home,” says Frank Hruska, Executive Director of Habitat SHR. “These open houses are always wonderful opportunities to celebrate with a grateful family.”
