Reimagining Greenbrier: Chesapeake city planners want to know what you want to see in the area

The city’s project team just released possible ideas for new retail space, restaurants, entertainment facilities, and more.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — There’s a new vision for the Greenbrier area in Chesapeake and you can help shape future developments!

The city’s project team just released possible ideas for new retail space, restaurants, entertainment facilities, and more. The concepts are built off community input.

“These are kind of the first time we are putting things on paper for future consideration," said Chesapeake Planning Director Jimmy McNamara.

The Greenbrier Mall site map includes a new multi-purpose event and entertainment facility for regional retail stores, dining, and a new library.

The Eden Way and Summit Pointe Map includes a new convocation center for events, a tree-lined main street with dining and shops.

Battlefield Center is focused on sports fields and recreation space.

Health Village is a concept that surrounds Chesapeake Regional Medical Center with age-targeted housing, and health retail.

McNamara said community feedback has focused on bringing more things to do to the city.

“We have certainly heard throughout this process is we need more entertainment space, we need more places to gather," McNamara said.

Some residents have their own development ideas.

“I wish there were more small shops and more, different coffee shops," said resident Cyndi Drew.

“Maybe more foods, we have a lot but not as much," said Amelie Bonano, who works in Chesapeake. "Maybe some shopping areas like how it is in Town Center.”

McNamara said transportation improvements are part of the plan.

"Not only improving the roadway for cars, but looking at transit options, looking at pedestrian connectivity," McNamara said.

He hopes to hear from more people in Chesapeake.

"We thought it was a great time to look at Greenbrier to ensure it stays not only an economic power for us at this time, but going into the future," McNamara said.

You still have time to share your thoughts!

A survey is open on the city’s website through December 15. City officials said they will prepare a recommendation report for Greenbrier in the summer of 2024.
