CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A classroom in a Chesapeake school caught fire on Friday morning.
The Chesapeake Fire Department said crews were dispatched around 9 a.m. after staff saw black smoke coming from the top of the modular classroom at Rise Christian Academy.
Staff immediately evacuated the building. Three teachers and 24 students got outside safely.
When firefighters arrived at 9:06 a.m. they saw flames coming from "an exterior wall-mounted HVAC unit" which was spreading to the roof of the building.
Crews deployed a hose line and controlled the fire at about 9:15 a.m.
Staff, students, and firefighters reported no injuries. Students will be relocated while the building is repaired. Investigators found the fire was accidental, caused by mechanical or electrical issues in the HVAC unit.
