Fire damages Chesapeake home, forces family out

The two adults and two children made it out of the home safely.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A Chesapeake family is without a home after a fire caused significant damage Monday afternoon, according to officials.

A 911 caller reported the fire at a single-story home on the corner of Portland Street and Wellington Avenue just before 1:50 p.m., the Chesapeake Fire Department said.

With the help of Norfolk Fire & Rescue, firefighters battled the blaze, which officials said was heavily burning in the back of the house. The fire department said the fire left the house "uninhabitable."

The two adults and two children made it out of the home safely. The Red Cross is now helping them with lodging.

Investigators determined the fire was accidental but did not say what exactly sparked it.
