EXCLUSIVE: Mother of student targeted in Oscar Smith fight speaks out

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) -- The mother of a student who was attacked at Oscar Smith High School earlier in the week is talking about the ordeal they have had to endure for months now.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) -- The mother of a student who was attacked at Oscar Smith High School earlier in the week is talking about the ordeal they have had to endure for months now.

The mother, who did not want to be identified, says several people snuck into Oscar Smith High on Tuesday with the sole purpose of attacking her son.

Police have charged 18-year-old Jonathan Rawls of Norfolk with trespassing and disorderly conduct for his involvement in the fight. The others involved are juveniles.

The victim's mother says no one from Oscar Smith has been able to answer how Rawls and other non-students were able to get into the school without anyone noticing.

"I know I can't walk in the school without showing an ID or being asked questions," she tells 13News Now reporter Marcella Robertson in an exclusive interview. "So how do they get to walk in the school?"

The mother believes Rawls and several other teens have been targeting her son since an altercation back in October. Since then, she says her house has been shot at nine times, and a brick was thrown into her home.

"We're in the house minding out our business... [then] 'Boom! Boom! Boom!'" she recounts of one of the shootings.

Police have not arrested anyone in those incidents, but she believes they are all the same suspects who are targeting her son.

The shootings had gotten so bad that they had to move. And then on Tuesday, several people snuck into her son's school to attack him.

Since then, the mother has kept her children home.

"They can't go to school, because you can't protect them at school," she says. "From the time my son gets on the bus at 8 o'clock in the morning until he gets off the bus at 4, he's your [the school's] responsibility. You're supposed to protect my son."

She adds, "My biggest fear is that nothing is going to be done until this kid causes bodily harm to my son."

We have reached out to Chesapeake Public Schools a number of times to ask the same question: how did someone get past security and into the high school undetected?

In a statement, Chesapeake Public Schools said the following:

The school division regards safety as its number one priority and goes to great lengths to ensure a safe environment on our school campuses. Each school has safety procedures in place - locked doors, cameras, Lobbyguard, security monitors, School Resource officers - to create a safe instructional atmosphere for our students.

Please keep in mind that the incident at OSH on Tuesday is an ongoing investigation by the school division and law enforcement. However, I can share that the incident occurred prior to the school day starting and the 18 year old was perceived as a student during the morning arrival. This was an unfortunate incident and our school staff is committed to being diligent regarding school safety.
