Downed power line blocks Centerville Turnpike

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Centerville Turnpike is closed at the Centerville Turnpike Bridge Friday afternoon, due to a downed power line across the roadway.

In post on social media around 12:20 p.m., Chesapeake Public Works said that nearby traffic signals were also non-operational, specifically at the intersections with Butts Station Road and Mount Pleasant Road. 

A Dominion Energy spokeswoman said an equipment failure around noon caused the downed power line. 

That resulted in bout 3,700 customers losing power. However, power had been restored to 2,300 customers by 2 p.m. They are still assessing the damage and working to restore power for everyone, the spokeswoman said.

In the meantime, police are directing traffic and the city is trying to get the traffic signals operating on generator power.
