CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) -- Deep Creek Elementary School was evacuated after a contractor cut an underground natural gas line near the building on Wednesday morning.
Chesapeake firefighters responded to the school at 9:13 a.m. Upon their arrival, they found a broken underground line leaking natural gas. The leak was outside, but close enough to the building that the school was evacuated as a precaution.
Columbia Gas was able to secure the leak just before 11 a.m. Firefighters checked the building with gas meters to ensure that the school was safe to reoccupy before allowing students and faculty back inside.
No injuries are reported, and students and faculty were allowed back in the school shortly after 11.
