Chesapeake Greenbrier home deemed 'unsafe' after Tuesday's storm damage

A home in Greenbrier is considered unsafe after a tree crashed into it during Tuesday's storm. Local experts have tips to avoid damage during intense weather.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Some people in a Chesapeake neighborhood are still picking up the pieces after Tuesday's storm.  A home in a Greenbrier neighborhood is vacant after a tree crashed into it during Tuesday's storm.

"The lights were flickering, the electricity off and on, it was really scary times," said neighbor Michelle Mayo.

Mayo has lived in the neighborhood for 11 years. She said she never believed something like this would happen so close to her home. "I was glad to see that nobody got hurt."

The City of Chesapeake has deemed the home unsafe, unfit, and dangerous. The Greenbrier company, Arbor Experts, said it's been busy since Tuesday's storm.

"We're still getting them right now as I speak. People are out of town and getting calls from neighbors. I imagine we'll see the effects of this for another 48 hours," said the owner of Arbor Experts, Kevin Kryzda.

He advises homeowners to have insurance and prepare ahead of a storm. "There's a lot of things that we can do, the simplest of them, often just some simple pruning of your trees if that would benefit the homeowner," said Kryzda.

He said pruning a tree will increase a tree's ability to resist high winds and easily remove weakened branches.

Kryzda also advises people always to consult an expert before removing a tree away from their home.
