CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Two people, including a child, were injured in a house fire in Chesapeake Monday night, officials said.
The fire happened in the 400 block of Spring Maple Court, which is in the Greenbrier area of the city. The Chesapeake Fire Department said it responded around 8:40 p.m. after neighbors noticed the fire and called 911.
Minutes later, firefighters arrived to find a two-story house with heavy smoke and flames coming through the roof on the rear of the structure.
Everyone was able to get outside of the house before firefighters got there. Medics took an adult and a child to the emergency room with injuries that weren't life-threatening.
The fire was under control at 9:12 p.m. according to the Chesapeake Fire Department. The house was significantly damaged and isn't habitable.
The Red Cross is helping those affected with finding a place to stay. A spokesperson for the fire department said 10 people were staying at the house, but their relation to each other isn't clear.
Chesapeake fire marshals are working to determine the cause of the fire.
