Equipment failure causes fire in Chesapeake home's crawl space

Only one adult was home at the time of the fire, and the firefighters said the resident got out safely after being alerted by working smoke detectors.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Three people have been displaced following a house fire in Chesapeake.

The Chesapeake Fire Department said firefighters were called to a home in the 1200 block of Masters Row in Greenbrier around 1:48 p.m. Saturday. They arrived to find a fire in the crawl space under the first floor of the two-story house.

Only one adult was home at the time of the fire, and the fire department said the resident got out safely after being alerted by working smoke detectors.

The fire was brought under control after about 30 minutes and no one was hurt. Because of Saturday's extreme heat, the fire department called in extra resources to make sure firefighters could take breaks and stay hydrated.

Investigators said the fire was accidental, caused by "equipment failure" in the home's crawl space.

The three adult residents are making their own lodging arrangements until home repairs are made.
