Chesapeake gets $4.4M grant to hire more firefighters

The federal grant was awarded through the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response program, designed to deliver funding directly to local fire departments.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — The city of Chesapeake just got a major boost to hire more firefighters.

Thanks to a federal grant, the city will receive nearly $4.5 million.

The funding was awarded through the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program, designed to deliver funding directly to local fire departments to support staffing.

Virginia Congressman Bobby Scott wrote a letter of support of Chesapeake's grant application and he got to announce the funding on Friday.

“Firefighters and other emergency personnel are essential to keeping our communities safe,” said Congressman Scott. “This grant funding to the City of Chesapeake will ensure their fire department is properly staffed and they can quickly and efficiently respond to any emergencies. This will improve outcomes for residents and maintain safety in our neighborhoods.”

The Chesapeake Fire Department's application window just opened and will remain open through the end of this month. People interested in becoming a firefighter with the city can apply on the city's website.
