Chesapeake apartment fire caused by unattended cooking, officials say

The Chesapeake Fire Department says they received a call before 4:00 p.m. about a fire at the Cambridge Square Apartments on Gainsborough Court.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A person has been displaced after an apartment fire in Chesapeake Wednesday afternoon.

The Chesapeake Fire Department said they received a call before 4 p.m. about a fire at the Cambridge Square Apartments on Gainsborough Court. Four minutes later, firefighters arrived and saw smoke coming from a first-floor apartment.

Crews evacuated the apartment without any injuries reported. The fire was marked as under control at about 4:20 p.m.

Firefighters spent a lot of time removing smoke from the building after the fire was contained so residents could safely return.

Officials said one resident was displaced and is staying with family.

The fire department determined that the fire was caused accidentally by unattended cooking. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), unattended cooking is the leading factor contributing to cooking fires and casualties.

The Chesapeake Fire Department wants to remind citizens to stay in the kitchen while they are frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling food.  If you leave the kitchen for even a short period, turn off the stove.
