The Virginia Aviation Board recently agreed to invest more than $2.4 million to fund 23 projects at 18 airports in Virginia. The funding is designed for public-use airports, not commercial airports.
Among the airports receiving funding is the Hampton Roads Executive Airport off Route 58 in Chesapeake. It is the only one in our area to receive funding in this round, but it did receive the most of all of the airports.
The airport received $1.3 million and will use it for an apron rehabilitation project at the South Terminal.
According to the airport’s website, the South Terminal Apron Rehabilitation project will provide new asphalt, drainage, pavement markings and tie-downs for the apron and taxiways extending south from the airport’s terminal apron. The construction elements include erosion control, pavement milling, grade correction, paving operations, site stabilization and more. It will also provide new asphalt for the taxiways to and from the Main Entrance West Hangar Site as well as new asphalt for the airport’s terminal apron where aircraft park.
Across the state, various airports plan to use their share of the money for upgrades such as lighting replacement, box hangars, fueling system upgrades, pollution prevention, broadband internet service, and other projects.
