CHESAPEAKE, Va. — An alleged shoplifting incident led to a chase by Chesapeake Police Department that ended in a crash on Saturday.
According to Virginia State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya, Chesapeake police attempted to make a traffic stop on a suspect who allegedly shoplifted from Target on Greenbrier Parkway at about 4:51 p.m. on Saturday.
The vehicle allegedly did not stop, and Chesapeake police began a pursuit, Anaya stated. They contacted Virginia State Police to request assistance while the vehicle was near Greenbrier Parkway on Interstate 64 westbound.
Eventually, the vehicle police were pursuing took the Indian River Road exit, 286A, and ran off the road to the left and went down an embankment.
Anaya stated there were two adult females and six children in the vehicle, all of whom were transported to a hospital for minor injuries and precautions.
Chesapeake Police Department “identified the shoplifting suspect and driver as Daija R. Thompson,” Anaya stated. Thompson is of Green Leaf Drive, Norfolk.
Thompson is charged with receiving stolen property, shoplifting, disregarding police command to stop, driving 20 or more miles over the speed limit, and six counts each of contributing to delinquency - abuse of child and gross, wanton or reckless care of a child.
Virginia State Police is investigating the crash at the request of Chesapeake Police Department.
