Man dead after crashing into a utility pole in Chesapeake

52-year-old Clarence Edward Whitehurst Jr., who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A driver died after hitting a utility pole in Chesapeake on Campostella Road, police said.

Chesapeake police responded to a single-vehicle crash near the 2000 block of Campostella Rd. around 7 p.m. Sunday.

Police say the driver veered off the road into a utility pole and then hit the back of a business near the corner of Campostella Road and Battlefield Boulevard.

52-year-old Clarence Edward Whitehurst Jr., who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police say the crash initially caused a gas leak that has since been stopped. Electricity outages were reported in the area as a result of the crash.

The Chesapeake Police Crash Reconstruction team responded and continues to investigate the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
