Moving walkway to be removed from Norfolk International Airport

Officials at Norfolk International Airport will soon begin tearing out a 350-foot people mover that was once the longest continuous moving walkway in the world.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC/AP) -- Officials at Norfolk International Airport will soon begin tearing out a 350-foot people mover that was once the longest continuous moving walkway in the world.

The 350-foot moving walkway was installed at the airport in 2002, between its arrival terminal and baggage claim area. The walkway looks like a flat escalator and helps people get across the lengthy bridge faster.

The former record-holder has since been eclipsed by a 680-foot moving walkway in the Sydney, Australia, botanical gardens.

The airport's director said officials decided to close it rather than repair it.

Deputy Executive Director Steve Sterling said the walkway "will be removed and the carpet on the Pedestrian Bridge will be replaced with flooring that better accommodates wheeled devices."

Viable alternatives for a possible replacement are still being looked at in the meantime.
