Two students injured in school bus crash Saturday night in Mathews County

Their investigation determined that the driver failed to stop at the intersection and ended up down a four-foot ditch. The bus was transporting 26 students.

MATHEWS COUNTY, Va. — A Mathews County school bus was transporting approximately 26 children when the vehicle failed to stop at an intersection and crashed late Saturday night.

According to a spokesperson for Virginia State Police, they responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash involving a school bus at the intersection of Route 14 and Buckley Hill Road, Mathews County at around 10:20 Saturday night.

Their investigation determined that the driver failed to stop at the intersection and ended up down a four-foot ditch. At the time, the bus was transporting 26 students ages 14 to 17.

Two of the students were transported with non-life-threatening injuries to a local hospital.  The school district arranged transportation for the other students on the bus.

Neither speed nor alcohol were factors in this crash, which is still under investigation. The spokesperson said charges are pending.
