WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — A man was killed Friday evening when he crashed on I-64 in Williamsburg.
According to a spokesperson for Virginia State Police, their officers responded to a report of a crash on I-64 at Exit 242A, which is the exit for Route 199/Humelsine Parkway. Once on scene, they found that a 2017 Ford Explorer had run off the roadway and struck a tree head-on.
The driver, who they identified as 48-year-old John Michael Gifford of Mechanicsville, died on impact.
The investigation concluded that Gifford was "traveling too fast for safe speed conditions" and lost control of his vehicle. The spokesperson said alcohol was not a contributing factor and Gifford was wearing his safety belt at the time of the crash.
