VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) — A man was caught performing a sexual act at the Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library on Tuesday evening.
Police said 56-year-old William Foster Wilcox was found masturbating in the reference section of the library around 5 p.m. Police charged Wilcox with drunk in public, exposure, and masturbation.
Laurel Sceviour has a 2 and 4-year-old, and they do to the library regularly. She said this news is shocking.
"It's just one of those things that you wouldn't think would happen at the library. Like any mother, I want to shield them from things that are beyond them. I mean me as an adult, I feel like that's beyond me,” said Sceviour.
Sceviour takes her children to get books each week, and she’s upset that this happened at their local library. Now, Sceviour said she’s going to be even more vigilant.
"Everyone's here with young people and old people, it's just not the place you would expect this to happen. It's something that I wouldn't have ever thought to look out for and I guess it's just one of those things where now- you kind of have to be careful wherever you go,” said Sceviour.
Teryn Poffenbarger visits the library each week. He’s disgusted that someone would do this in a public place in front of children.
"Every single time I come here, it's always like really young children, and like really elderly people you know they like coming to the library. Those are like our most precious people of society, you know we're supposed to be protecting,” said Poffenbarger. Poffenbarger also feels that this exposure will make people not feel secure.
"The fact that they have to walk into somewhere that they feel safe and see something like that, it's just inappropriate,” said Poffenbarger.
