HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- Almost 200 people participated in the 8th annual VA2k Walk and Roll event at the Hampton VA Medical Center on Wednesday.
The purpose of the walk was to raise money and collect donations like an HRT bus pass, phone card or food for homeless veterans.
“I work with numerous veterans’ families, our veterans,” said participant Felicia Gaddis. “it’s important to me that no veteran is homeless and they have all the resources they need.”
Coordinator Jennifer Daly explained that raising money to use towards bus passes is incredibly beneficial.
“Those are most useful for our veterans to be able to get to their medical appointments, to get to other appointments,” said Daly.
On a national scale, the annual walk has raised about $2 million dollars for the homeless veterans program.
Participant Bridgette Cartens said not enough people pay attention to the issue.
“You know, we see our veterans all the time struggling and trying to make sure that they have the things they need and you know, they gave it all for us, so we should give it all back to them,” said Carstens.
