Kempsville Rec Center open to public this weekend only

The Kempsville Recreation Center officially opened its doors on Thursday and this weekend only tour the facility for free.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- The Kempsville Recreation Center officially opened its doors on Thursday, and this weekend only tour the facility for free.

The 87,116 square foot state-of-the-art facility has an indoor pool, double gymnasium, 1/8 mile indoor walking or jogging track, classrooms, and plenty of fitness equipment.

On July 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, July 2 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. tours are free and open to the public.

Saturday fun filled activities will be available like face-painting, food trucks, sport demonstrations, and free children's vision testing by the Lion's Club.

Originally opened in 1977 as the first community recreation center in Virginia Beach, they closed their doors after 37 years to make way for a more modern center.

The grand opening was originally scheduled for June 8, but due to construction delays the grand opening was pushed back.

The Kempsville Recreation Center cost just over $32 million and took 2 years to build.

Annual and monthly memberships for the rec center are available ranging in prices.
