Woman arrested for DUI after running over person in James City County, police say

It happened at the 7-Eleven on 1800 Jamestown Road, leaving the victim with serious injuries.

JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. — A woman was arrested after running over a person in the parking lot of a convenience store in James City County, then driving off, late Thursday night, police said.

Danita Martin, a 45-year-old from Surry County, faces several charges, including driving under the influence, maiming due to DUI and felony hit-and-run resulting in injury, according to the James City County Police Department.

The incident happened at the 7-Eleven on 1800 Jamestown Road outside of Williamsburg, leaving the victim, a 59-year-old man, with serious injuries. The county's police and fire departments responded around 11:10 p.m.

Police said that witness accounts and surveillance footage revealed the situation began as an argument between the victim and a woman in the parking lot.

One eyewitness, who wanted to remain anonymous, told 13News Now that he saw the hit-and-run unfold. He said he was pumping gas when he heard a man and woman start yelling at each other. That’s when he saw the woman run over the man with her car.

According to police, Martin got in a Chevrolet Silverado, backed into and ran over the victim, then got away. The victim and Martin know each other and went to the store together.

Within 20 minutes, police found Martin's vehicle in the parking lot of the Jamestown Settlement. A DUI investigation of Martin led to her arrest and subsequent charges, police said.

Martin was taken to Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail and denied bond, and her vehicle has been impounded.

Police said the victim was admitted to the intensive care unit at the Riverside Regional Hospital in Newport News. Their current condition hasn't been disclosed.
