JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. — A Newport News resident has died after being struck by a tractor-trailer truck early Sunday morning, James City County Police said.
Police say it happened near Noah's Ark Veterinary Hospital on Richmond Road in James City County around 12:30 a.m. Investigators say the driver of the truck -- which was not carrying a trailer at the time -- attempted to avoid the pedestrian, who had been retrieving their belongings from the road, unaware of the approaching truck.
The victim, Joshua Barkley, was airlifted to VCU Medical Center in critical condition. Police later announced that Barkley was removed from life support on Tuesday.
Barkley turned 20 years old on Dec. 25, the day after the crash.
The accident remains under investigation. At this time, police do not expect the driver to face any charges.
