JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. — One teenager is charged, and additional charges may be forthcoming, in an altercation and shooting in James City County on Saturday afternoon.
The shooting happened about 1:38 p.m. Oct. 19, according to the James City County Police Department. They responded to reports coming from the 100 block of Gray Gables Drive within the Country Village Mobile Home Park.
The shooting allegedly followed a verbal altercation among four juveniles and one adult, all of whom are believed to be known to each other, the police press release stated.
During the confrontation, one individual from the group of four juveniles brandished a handgun and fired multiple rounds in the direction of the adult. No injuries were reported, but an occupied dwelling was struck by gunfire prior to the group of juveniles fleeing the area.
A York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office K-9 was called in to help locate both the offender and the firearm used in the incident. By the evening, officers successfully identified and located all involved individuals, including a 16-year-old male who is alleged to have fired the weapon. While multiple shell casings were recovered from the scene, the firearm has yet to be recovered.
The 16-year-old suspect is charged with the following offenses: reckless handling of a firearm, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, underage possession of a firearm, and shooting into an occupied dwelling. The juvenile was transported to the Merrimac Juvenile Detention Center. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be forthcoming.
