JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. — The James City County Police Department announced the formation of its first K-9 unit on Friday.
Officer Drew Crockett and Master Police Officer Ryan Ellis were selected as the Department's first handlers and were paired with their K-9s on Thursday. They will receive specialized training with their K-9s to receive official certification in the coming months.
“We are confident that these invaluable K-9 officers will play a key role in enhancing and innovating public safety for our residents,” said Chief Mark Jamison.
The K-9 unit will be used for narcotics detection and search and rescue missions, specifically for cases involving missing or endangered individuals.
In addition to the two K-9s, a yellow, female Labrador Retriever and a male German Shepherd will be utilized for crime prevention.
"Their keen senses and specialized training make them indispensable in high-stakes situations that require skills beyond human capability," the James City County Police Department said. "These K-9s will also be cherished, community-involved members of the Department, playing a visible role in community outreach and crime prevention events."
