WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — One person has died and another person was injured after a car accident in the Williamsburg area on Tuesday night.
At about 9 p.m., James City County (JCC) officials said they responded to the 4600 block of Fenton Mill Road after receiving reports of a crash. When they arrived on the scene, they discovered a damaged Ford Taurus in a ditch off the roadway. Two people were inside and both needed immediate medical attention.
Based on a preliminary investigation, police said the Taurus was traveling westbound on Fenton Mill Road in low-visibility conditions when it came upon a stationary Ford Escape stopped in the westbound lane, facing the wrong way with its headlights on. In an attempt to avoid a head-on collision, the Taurus swerved and exited the roadway, sideswiping the Escape and driving off into the ditch.
The passenger of the Taurus, 61-year-old Astrid Wagenaar-Otey of James City County, was unresponsive at the scene. Medics transported her to the Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. The driver of the Taurus sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Sentara Williamsburg.
The crash remains under investigation and JCC police are consulting with the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office to determine if charges will be necessary.
Fenton Mill Road was closed for about three hours after the accident to process the scene.
