JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. — A woman has died after a vehicle crash in James City County, according to Virginia State Police (VSP).

VSP says they received several calls around 2:50 a.m. Sunday reporting an older model Toyota Sedan was driving the wrong way on Interstate 64 Eastbound in James City County. When troopers got to the scene the car had driven off the roadway into the guardrail and found the driver to be intoxicated, officials said.

While that incident was unfolding, fire and rescue had the right travel lane blocked off with the assistance of a VDOT Safety Service Patroller (SSP). Cones were set up and the vehicle's arrow board was illuminated directing traffic to the left lane.

Shortly after the lane closure was set up, a 2017 Toyota Corolla drove straight into the back of the VDOT SSP truck.

The driver of the Corolla, 25-year-old Ayanna E. Coan, died on impact. A man and woman, who were passengers in the car, both suffered serious life-threatening injuries. The woman was taken to Riverside Regional Hospital and the man was flown to Virginia Commonwealth University's Medical Center.

The driver of the VDOT SSP truck was not injured.

VSP says it is unknown if alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
