Police: Driver, 64, dies after veering off road, into embankment in James City County

The single-vehicle crash happened on a stretch of Forge Road between Lakeview Drive and Little Creek Dam Road at around 4:30 p.m.

JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. — A 64-year-old driver died after crashing into an embankment off Forge Road in James City County late Monday afternoon, authorities said.

The single-vehicle crash happened on a stretch of Forge Road between Lakeview Drive and Little Creek Dam Road at around 4:30 p.m. The initial investigation reveals the driver, Walter Barry III, veered off the westbound lanes into an embankment — overturning his vehicle.

Barry was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. There were no other occupants reported.

Investigators said speeding and possibly either alcohol or a medical emergency may have contributed to the crash.

Both lanes of Old Stage Road were shutdown with closures still in place shortly before 7 p.m. Police did not say when the closures would be lifted.
