JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. — The James City County Police Department is investigating a deadly car crash that happened Sunday afternoon.
It happened around 4:10 p.m. at the intersection of Old Stage Road and Fieldstone Parkway.
According to police, the car was traveling eastbound on Old Stage Road when it exited the road and crashed. Witnesses reported that the car stopped unexpectedly before accelerating off the road into an embankment. It overturned, and returned to the roadway.
One passenger, who did not have a seatbelt on, was ejected from the car and killed, police said. She was identified as 71-year-old Nancy Roach.
The driver was transported by helicopter to VCU Medical Center in Richmond.
Police don't know why the car stopped and left the road, but said a medical emergency may have been a factor.
The eastbound lanes of Old Stage Road closed for five hours, but are back open.
