ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. — A woman and her dog have died after a single-vehicle crash on Route 32/Route 10, or Benns Church Boulevard, in Isle of Wight County Thursday morning.
Virginia State Police (VSP) say that the crash happened at around 7:10 a.m. 35-year-old Amber Gibson, of Carrolton, and her dog died at the scene. VSP previously reported the victim's age as 43.
Troopers said the preliminary investigation reveals that Gibson stepped into the roadway, which doesn't have a sidewalk, and was hit by a 2002 Toyota Four Runner that was traveling west. The crash happened at dawn, and investigators said Gibson had not been wearing any reflective clothing.
VSP said the driver was at the scene and no charges have been filed at this time.
This marks the second pedestrian crash on Benns Church Boulevard in the span of three months. In November, someone hit and seriously injured a 14-year-old boy walking a dirt bike along the road.
13News Now spoke to people who live near Benns Church Boulevard. One woman said she would like to see a walkway along the road. Another neighbor previously told 13News Now that the road is too dangerous for pedestrians.
“When it starts to get a little dark, it gets dangerous," said one man, who wanted to remain anonymous. “I would like to see more lights in this area. I would like to see just some work done.”
VSP said Thursday's crash is still under investigation. If you know anything about the incident you can reach out to the Crime Line by calling 1-888-562-5887 or by using P3 Tips online.
