ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY, Va. — A home under construction in the Rushmere area of Isle of Wight County was damaged by fire Monday morning.
According to Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue, the fire happened on Creekway Drive. Crews from several fire departments responded around 7:20 a.m. and found a large home engulfed with flames and heavy smoke.
The home was in the final stages of construction and was unoccupied.
Firefighters tried to knock down the fire quickly, but they had to get out due to the volume of the fire and the heat inside. The fire was under control around 8:45 a.m., but crews stayed at the house to extinguish hot spots.
The cause of the fire isn't known right now, but it is being investigated.
The fire departments that helped in the response were the Rushmere Volunteer Fire Department, Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department, Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department, Isle of Wight Fire Rescue and Surry Volunteer Fire Department.
